So, two weekends ago I made a trip to Budapest, which was absolutely amazing. Budapest is one of the prettiest cities in Europe (besides Vienna, of course!). It was interesting to see it, because the history of Budapest kind of collides with Viennese history, thanks to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We recognized a lot of names (Maria Theresa, Franz Josef) and even a lot of the architecture was similar to Vienna’s. I went with two other girls, and we had a blast. We decided to go because Budapest and Vienna are actually the closest European capitals, being only a 3 hour train ride apart! Budapest is nice because you can walk everywhere, because everything is in the same place! It was also an overall cheap trip. We took only took out 20,000 forint (Hungarian money)! 20,000 forint is about the same as $100, but we thought we were really cool for having 20,000 of something! We made that 20,000 forint last for 3 of us for 3 days. Budapest actually used to be two different cities, Buda and Pest, that came together during the Hapsburg Empire. We visited the Buda castle, Hero’s Square, the largest Synagogue in Europe, St. Stephens church, and more! We ate at a Hungarian family restaurant that served traditional Hungarian food (our only choices being meat or vegetarian) and played some great live music! Budapest at night is absolutely gorgeous – they light up the city and the Danube looks absolutely amazing. I would recommend everyone to go there at some point – it’s an amazing weekend trip if you’re studying in Europe.

    Hi Tia,
I will be staying in Budapest for 5 days in mid-april. All your tips are so great. I will be travelling alone though and would like to know how safe the city is (you know like a woman’s point of view). Hope you’re loving Europe as much as I am!
    best regards

      Hey Carolina!
I’m so excited for you going to Budapest, because it is reeeaaaallly awesome! The city seemed safe to me, but obviously it is still a big city and take precautions. I never felt unsafe, although I was always in a group. It was pretty heavily populated, even in February, so I guess that’s good and bad. If you have any other questions, please ask! You’re going to have sooo much fun!!
